Preamble
Let me (Mikael) and Howard Maxi be your guide as we take you on a trip back fourteen years in time - to a time before the financial crisis, to a time when McFly were top of the charts, to a time where YouTube was a mere year old, and most relevant to this blog: to time where refereeing trios were a novelty in FIFA Refereeing.
Welcome to the FIFA World Cup 2006 Refereeing blog!

The refereeing of every World Cup in the twenty-first century was a reaction to try and correct the perceived errors of the previous tournament - for 2006, that meant much fewer referees, who, for the first time were all selected as trios with two regular assistant referees and above anything (though it sounds ridiculous and obviously axiomatic) to try and deliver the best possible officiating in as many matches as possible, after the apparently disastrous refereeing four years earlier (though I disagree).
Referees were encouraged to be strict in eight following areas:
- Striking offences (elbowing)
- Reckless or Serious Foul Play tackles
- Holding offences (shirt pulling)
- Delaying the Restart
- Simulation
- Behaviour in walls at freekicks
- Law 4 (player's equipment)
- Dissent
The stage was set!
We will release two matches a day - one at noon (CET) and another at five o'clock in the afternoon.
HowardMaxi and I hope you will interact with us on the blog and will enjoy our look back at the refereeing of FIFA World Cup 2006!
